Respiratory Syncitial Virus (RSV) is a viral infection very common and severe in young infants. It is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia (an infection of the lungs) in children younger than 1 year of age.
Symptoms include:
Runny nose
Decrease in appetite
Coughing
Sneezing
Fever
Wheezing
Infants may initially present with RSV, the only symptoms may be irritability, decreased activity, and breathing difficulties.
RSV Care
Most RSV can last from 2-4 weeks. Some babies, who have difficulty breathing, may need to be checked for low oxygen levels and may need breathing treatments. Healthy infants infected with RSV do not usually need to be hospitalized, but some children with RSV infection, especially infants younger than 6 months of age, may need to be hospitalized if they are having trouble breathing or are dehydrated.
You can manage fever and pain with over-the-counter fever reducers and pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil). Visits to a healthcare provider to test for an RSV infection is important and the healthcare provider will evaluate how severe the person’s RSV infection is to determine if the patient should be hospitalized.
